SOUTH BURLINGTON, VT. — This circa 1780–1800 cherry candlestand with dish top was reported stolen from an important Vermont collection in November.
Probably Connecticut, the candlestand’s scalloped top (lower rim) is identical to No. 373 in Charles Montgomery’s 1966 book American Furniture the Federal Period (see Winterthur 1957.1083 candlestand). The scrubbed top has a slight warp and a crack across the center. There is a small knot hole in the top and there is a ring turning on the column. The column and legs are in original red paint. The stand measures 26 inches tall and the diameter of the top is 13 inches.
A reward is offered for the return of this stand. Contact Duane Merrill directly at 802-363-4898.
