SPARKS, MD. — A phone bidder picked up a rare and important Maysville, Ky., stoneware pitcher for $143,750 early on during Crocker Farm’s July 16 auction.
Lot 54, a 3-gallon pitcher made in 1840 by Ezekiel Henry Wood had lavish incised bird-on-branch motifs and applied and impressed decoration. “This is one of the coolest pieces we’ve ever handled,” said auctioneer and owner Tony Zipp just before he auctioned this piece. “The condition is great, the size is great…” Bidding went back and forth between a phone bidder and person standing near the back of the room with the phone holding on until the end.
