GENEVA, SWITZERLAND — The “Sunrise Ruby” – an exceptional and rare 25.59-carat Burmese stone – sold for $30.3 million at Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels sale on May 12. The stunning result established world auction records for any ruby, both in total price and per-carat price; any non-diamond jewel; and any stone by Cartier.
Also at the sale, “The Historic Pink Diamond,” a rare 8.72-carat fancy vivid pink diamond – which has been linked to Princess Mathilde Bonaparte, niece of Napoleon I – achieved $15.9 million.
The auction achieved a total of $160.9 million, in excess of its $93 million estimate, marking the highest-ever total for any jewelry auction. A total of 94 percent of the lots were sold, with a total of six major records broken. A full report on the sale will follow later.
