DALLAS, TEXAS — In only a few instances did Universal Studios produce an advance or “teaser” for their great horror movies, but when they did they were completed by talented artists, in this case, by artist Karoly Grosz. Perhaps one of the most impressive of all of the great Universal Studios horror posters, a terrifying, 1933 one-sheet teaser poster for The Invisible Man lead an all-star cast at Heritage Auctions’ vintage posters auction March 25–26, when it sold at $274,850.
“Even the most advanced collectors have never seen this poster in person,” said Grey Smith, director of vintage posters at Heritage Auctions. “Karoly Grosz does a hauntingly wonderful job capturing the insanity that slowly takes hold of the film’s mad scientist.”
The next three lots in the two-day auction were all from Casablanca: an Italian 4-foglio with artwork by Luigi Martinati sold for $107,550; an Italian 4-foglio with artwork by Silvano “Nano” Campeggi sold for $89,625 and a first, post-war release Danish poster with artwork by Benny Stilling sold for $89,625.
All prices include the buyer’s premium. A complete review of the auction will appear in a future issue.
