THOMASTON, MAINE — There were a few surprises at Thomaston Place Auction Galleries’ Trendsetter sale on May 24, a one-day teaser sale conducted under the firm’s Thomaston Light umbrella. One of them was a Tiffany & Co silverplated hot water urn from the Nineteenth Century that was estimated $200/300. The hot beverage dispenser with an 1854-69 mark was ornate; it had scrolled side handles, a surface with intricate floral and foliate repousse decoration, Greek key and beaded trim and a dolphin head spigot. The cartouche had a dent but was engraved “RHB from JSB,” and the 18½-inch-high urn sold for $2,400, including buyer’s premium. More highlights from this 295-lot sale will be presented in a follow-on review.
