DALLAS — Numerous bidders went after a 1955 Topps Roberto Clemente #164 PSA Mint 9, which ended up selling for $264,000, including buyer’s premium, to claim top-lot honors in Heritage Auctions’ Summer Sports Card Catalog Auction, July 20. The card is from the 1955 set in which Topps abandoned the traditional portrait format that dominated the hobby since its inception, in favor of a landscape design. This card is one of the finest known examples of the Hall of Famer’s rookie season—one of just 11 unqualified Clemente rookie cards graded as a Mint 9 by PSA; there is just one known example carrying a higher grade. A full review of the auction will appear in a future issue.
