BUFORD, GA. – An untitled drawing by Bill Traylor with central image of a woman holding an umbrella sold for $175,200 at Slotin Folk Art Auction’s November 13-14 sale. The woman in blue skirt and striped blouse stands beside a dog, above them appears a geometric basket. Traylor completed the work in graphite and colored pencil on the back of a Phillip Morris cardstock cutout advertisement.
Circa 1939, the well-known image measured 25½ inches high and came with six exhibition labels on the back: two for the Janet Fleisher Gallery, one for Fleisher Ollman Gallery and another for Salon 94. The drawing was at one point in the collection of Elyse Saperstein whose estate Slotin auctioned off in 2003. The work made a silver screen appearance in filmmaker Jeffrey Wolf’s recent documentary on the artist, Bill Traylor: Chasing Ghosts.
