SUDBURY, MASS. — All of the 551 snuff bottles from the Mitchell Bistany Collection gaveled down successfully when Tremont Auctions sold his collection on October 22, with proceeds going to the Wounded Warrior fund. Bottles in glass, cloisonne, porcelain, cinnabar and hardstone of many kinds were presented, mostly Chinese but with a few Japanese examples. Top-lot honors at $13,090 went to a 2¼-inch-tall early Twentieth Century bottle, its interior painted with a landscape with hen, chicks and a still life, that was signed Ding Er Zhong. According to the auction house, the bottle, which carried a $200/300 example, saw stiff competition for the rare bottle that was signed by an important artist; the buyer was on the East Coast. Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium; watch for a more extensive sale review in an upcoming issue.
