BEVERLY HILLS — Tom Wesselmann’s (1931–2004) 1989 “Monica Nude with Cezanne” and Fernando Botero’s (b 1930), “Woman with her Purse” drew numerous bids before selling for $275,000 each, with buyer’s premium, to share top-lot honors in Heritage Auctions’ Modern & Contemporary Art auction on November 29.
“Monica Nude with Cezanne” is color enamel on cut-out steel, and measures 46½ by 81½ inches wide. It is signed, titled and dated on the reverse: “Wesselmann 1989 Monica Nude with Cezanne / Wesselmann ‘89.”
“Woman with her Purse” ties Botero’s 2000 “Seated Man” (which sold in May 2018) for the second-highest price ever paid through Heritage Auctions for a work by the Colombian figurative artist and sculptor. An oil on canvas measuring 31¼ by 22 inches, “Woman with her Purse” is signed and dated lower right “Botero 10.”
A full review of the auction will appear in a future edition.
