DALLAS — Just 103 lots comprised Heritage Auctions Historical Platinum Session Signature Auction on December 15, but the sale achieved an impressive $2,085,750 total with more than 650 in-person, online, absentee or phone bidders taking to the various fields of play. A silver and jeweled presentation sword once heralded as “The Most Beautiful And Costly Sword Yet Manufactured In This Country” that had belonged to General Ulysses S. Grant easily earned the sale’s top price of $375,000. The singular item had been made by St Louis silversmith and jeweler, Henry Folsom, and had a well-documented provenance as well as exhibition history that included two when it won “best in” honorifics. An upcoming issue will feature a more extensive discussion of the sale, which also featured 33 typewriters from the collection of Steve Soboroff.
