BOSTON — Richard “Dick” Balzer passed away on December 3, 2017, only months before the opening of “Phantasmagoria,” an exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, that includes many objects from his collection of Nineteenth Century optical prints and devices. “Welcome to the magic lantern show,” Balzer says in a clip of archival footage. “You may find some curious and interesting things happen this evening.” Before cinema and movies, audiences were captivated by great theatrical storytellings done with early projectors, known as magic lanterns. This video, produced by Balzer’s son, Matthew Balzer, offers a fascinating look into the man who fell in love with this genre as well as a peek into the MFA’s exhibition, which continues through May 28.
