EASTON, MD. — Guyette & Deeter’s November 8-9 auction was a strong sale, filled with decoys from all over the country, sporting art and contemporary carvings; about 70 lots brought five-figure prices with four of the six highest earning decoys auction had been made by the Ward Brothers of Crisfield, Md. Leading the selection and the auction, and selling for $132,000, was a rigmate pair of pintails with slightly turned heads, a style the brothers employed in 1936. Earning $90,000 was a pintail hen with deep shoulder carving and particularly detailed paint as it had been made as a gift for Dr Edgar Burke, a close friend of the brothers. An inscription on its base recorded this and a Sotheby’s sticker noted it had been in the McCleery collection. Five lots by Elmer Crowell were among the highest earners in the sale, led at $114,000 by a rig of eight shorebird “flatties.” Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium as reported by the auction house.
