A rare William Henry Buck oil on canvas depicting a New Orleans bayou scene brought a hefty price at the Neal Auction Company’s annual Louisiana Purchase auction this past weekend, September 30.
The painting, titled “Three Cabins Along a Shoreline,” depicted three distinctly different Acadian Creole period cabins along a inlet. Figures were depicted around each of the cabins with one person fishing from a small pier, another in a rowboat and others engaged in various chores. With moss laden trees in the background on one side and an expanse of water with sailing vessels on the other, the painting aptly portrayed the regional flavor.
Bidding on the lot, estimated at $150/250,000, was brisk with it selling to a buyer in the gallery for $344,750. A complete review of the auction will appear in a future issue.—DSS
