OAKLAND, CALIF. —Clars Auction Gallery’s March 19 sale of fine art, decorative art, furniture, jewelry and Asian art was led by a work by Chinese master calligrapher Yu Youren (1879–1964). The two-page ink on paper essay discussing the Qing dynasty artist Shi Tao, signed and dedicated to his son, sold well above its $50/70,000 estimate to attain $121,000.
