The preview party crowd glittered and the made-to-order risotto was divine, but it was a core group of outstanding exhibitors and a dynamic management team that made the Newport Antiques Show shine.

Like people of a certain age who can sometimes do with a tune-up, the venerable National Academy Museum and School in New York City has been treated to a full on facelift and the grand old house is set to sparkle. The 110-year-old Beaux Arts-style building on Fifth Avenue at 89th Street, the institution⁳ home since 1942, has been closed for the past year while renovations were made. Rooted in the past and solidly in the present but always with an eye to the future, the National Academy of Design, as it was first known, has been a unique repository of American art and a school of instruction since its founding in 1825. Redesign of its public spaces has brought the facility squarely into the Twenty-First Century; its new strategic plan and governance have given the institution new life. For its September 16 reopening, the nearly 200-year-old academy celebrates the milestone with two exhibitions of works from the permanent collection, comprising more than 7,000 paintings drawings, prints and sculpture by major American artists and architects.

A group of satellite shows collectively known as Madison-Bouckville Antique Week.has become as much a part of the entire Madison-Bouckville experience as its original show. Conducted during the week ending with the third weekend of August each year, the event took place most recently from August 15 to 21.

Tom Tarry and his staff from The Results Group produced their first antiques show, the Madison-Bouckville Antique Festival, August 18′1, with more than 600 exhibiting antiques dealers.

Beginning September 18, Jusepe de Ribera⁳ monumental portrait of Mary Magdalene from the collection of the Museo Nacional del Prado will be on view at the Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University.

The High Museum of Art recently acquired a significant collection of 56 prints by artist Kiki Smith from collector Stephen Dull. This group of prints makes the High a major national repository for Smith⁳ graphic work.

Record prices were achieved at PBA Galleries’ auction of a small but significant group of rare books on China on August 11 in a sale of Americana, travel and exploration, maps and ephemera.

On Saturday, September 10, Freeman⁳ sold an important Chinese imperial-style ⁤ouble dragon†white jade seal that left its $30/50,000 estimate in the dust when it attained $3.5 million, creating new records for the highest-selling single lot and most successful sale of the company.

Devin Moisan packed them in at the Elks Lodge August 2, where an eclectic group of estate and collection objects, mostly from around New Hampshire, drew a standing-room-only crowd.
