PHOENIXVILLE, PENN. — Philadelphia businessman and telecommunications pioneer William Gross amassed a robust collection of antique coffee mills, with examples spanning the last 150 years, of both American and international origin. Makers such as Enterprise, Fairbanks Morse & Co, Henry Troemner, Landers Frary & Clark, Star Mill, Elgin National and others were represented, most examples of which were offered in original, untouched condition in a December 1 auction hosted by Wiederseim Associates.

PHILADELPHIA — Freeman’s American Art and Pennsylvania Impressionists auction was conducted on December 3. With 359 registered bidders, the 101-lot sale saw a sell-through rate of around 70 percent. Freeman’s head of department for American Art and Pennsylvania Impressionists auctions, Raphaël Chatroux, shared that while it was not their best sale overall, the performances do reflect the current state of the market. Overall, the auction saw more interest from private collectors and not many dealers.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Nearly 1,450 lots crossed the podium at Brunk Auctions November 16-18, the first of which was a single-day Emporium & Coins Auction, followed by a two-day Premier Auction. Ninety-two percent of the lots transacted successfully, earning the North Carolina firm $4,108,747.

Not only did Bertoia see the largest in-house audience in four years, but there were also 1,600 bidders participating online and 275 over the phone or via absentee bids.

And, arguably, one of the smallest nests of burl bowls you’ve ever seen. Nearly anything that might appeal to antiques collectors was at the November 26 Gurley antiques show in Marlborough.

LONE JACK, MO. — On Sunday, December 10, Soülis Auctions offered nearly 200 Mid-Americana items, including folk, tramp, outsider and Native American art as well as country furniture and accessories. Among a large selection of quilts, trade signs and shooting targets, bidders were presented with a significant collection of weathervanes, one of which became the top lot of the auction.
