International Poster Gallery will celebrate its tenth anniversary with an exhibition featuring poster bests from every decade since the art form’s first flowering in the Belle Epoque.
“Decade’s Best,” assembled from the gallery’s holdings, recently augmented by the purchase of two major collections, will open Saturday, May 15, and run through September 6. A gala preview party will be Friday, May 14, at 6 pm.
Two talks are scheduled. “Then and Now – How the Poster Market has Changed in the Past Ten Years,” at 6 pm on Thursday, May 20. and “Decorating with Posters – Dos and Don’ts” at 6 pm on Wednesday, May 26.
Regular gallery hours are Monday-Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm, and Sunday, noon to 6 pm. The gallery is at 205 Newbury Street.
The exhibition includes classics from the decade of the 1890s, which is often called the “Golden Age of the Poster.” Along with timeless images from Steinlen, Mucha and Toulouse-Lautrec, there will be travel posters by Hugo D’Alesi and numerous miniature plates from the “Maitres de l’Affiche,” or “Masters of the Poster.”
Another highlight of the show, which harks back to the gallery’s exhibition of Italian posters, is Giuseppe Riccobaldi’s 1935 moonlit poster for Fiat’s new model 1500. The postwar section will be dominated by the contributions of the Swiss, who became the world leaders in graphic design, while the fifties will be dominated by the relaxed humor of Herbert Leupin in Switzerland, Raymond Savignac in France and Paul Rand in the United States.
The show concludes with several selections from the sixties to today from Milton Glaser, David Klein, Wolfgang Weingart, Rosemarie Tissi and Ralph Schraivogel.
