– Christie’s Important Natural History auction on October 14 posted strong results for many of the lots offered, with a sales total of $1,590,821 realized from 123 lots offered.
A sold rate of 72 percent was announced for the sale, although strong prices paid throughout the auction saw the totals come within 90 percent of the auction’s estimated gross.
Leading the sale was The Natural History of Carolina, by Mark Catesby, circa 1679-1749, London, printed for Charles Marsh, Thomas Wilcox and Benjamin Stichall, 1754, selling at the high estimate of $147,500 to a buyer from the American trade.
Another lot to do well was the North American Indian Portfolio, by George Catlin, printed by Egyptian Hall and with the text printed by C. and J. Adlard, 1844. The lot fetched an impressive $107,550 from a private buyer.
