Thirteen phone bidders and one bidder in the room chased Martin Johnson Heade’s oil on canvas “Still Life with Cherokee Roses” to $402,000 at Skinner’s American and European Paintings sale last Friday, November 18. The painting, which came from a Massachusetts library and was estimated at $75/125,000, sold on the phone. The Nineteenth Century Italian picture “Hearing the News of the Day” by Gerolamo Induno drew significant international interest and maxed out the 13 available phones and several bidders in the room before it sold for $237,000. The painting was estimated at $10/15,000 and sold to an Italian buyer in the room. The picture came from the same Massachusetts library as the Heade. A complete report of the sale will appear in a future edition. -FMJM
