Across New England harvest fairs and preparations for Halloween are underway. What better way to enjoy the season than to attend an old fashion book auction.
To tempt you, we offer an unusual item of historical interest, a stock certificate from the North American Land Company. It signed by 2 of its founders and sold to William Temple Franklin, the grandson of Benjamin Franklin who assisted his grandfather in arranging the Franco-American Alliance and later the Treaty of Paris. It is signed by Robert Morris who signed the Declaration of Independence and by James Marshall, the younger brother of U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Marshall. Of note, the company failed. Franklin lost his investment, and both Morris and Marshall ended up in prison for fraud.
Or how about a copy of Nickersons (1931, limited, signed) “Land Ho! – 1620,” by Hagedorn (1921, signed) “Roosevelt in the Bad Lands,” or by Cole & Schulze (1919, 1st ed.) the “Record of Service of Connecticut Men … in the Spanish American War, Philippine Insurrection and China Relief Expedition,” with a framed “Soldiers Memorial Spanish American War of 1898 Company F 3rd CT Infantry,” scroll.
For explorers we have by Robeson (1876,1st ed.) “Narrative of the North Polar Expedition U.S. Ship Polaris,” by Byrd (1938, signed) “Alone,” by Nansen (1898, 1st ed.) “Farthest North: Being the Record of a Voyage of the Ship Fram,” and Peary’s (1901, 1st ed.) “The Snow Baby.”
We continue to have a fine selection of geology 1st editions such as Percival’s (1842) “Report on the Geology of the State of Connecticut,” Miller’s (1863) “A Tract on Crystallography,” and Dall’s (1870, in dj) “Alaska and its Resources.”
Fans of fiction might enjoy Wylie’s (1923, 1st ed.”) Jennifer Lorn: A Sedate Extravaganza,” Van Ellen’s (1936. 1st ed. in dj) “I Am The Fox,” Saint – Exupery’s (1942,1st ed. in dj) “Flight to Arras,” Faulkner’s (1933, 1st ed.) “The Green Bough,” and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s (1934, 1st ed.) “Tender is the Night,” Signed 1st edition poetry includes works by Allen Ginsberg (1982) “Plutonian Ode and Other Poems 1977-1980,’,’ Sara Teasdale (1926) “The Dark of the Moon,” and Amy Clampitt’s (1982) “The Summer Solstice.”
It is the Halloween season so in keeping with the season there is Gorey’s (1974, 1st ed. in dj) “Instant Lives,” Hyslop’s (1920) “Contact with Another World: The Latest Evidence as to Communication with the Dead,” Tucker’s (1929) “In the Land of the Living Dead,” and a story board inspired by Richard Karine titled “Gateway to Death.”
Lastly, there are WWII posters, children’s books, art volumes, a work signed by Carl Rogers, and the signed motorcycle license of American paleontologist Roland Thaxter Bird with a stone ax head that once belonged to him.
For further information on this 6 pm, Friday, October 2nd book auction to be held at the South Congregational Church, 949 Main St, South Glastonbury, CT 06073.
