The family of Joel I. Zakow, a longtime presence in the art world, is deeply saddened to announce his death on March 29. Joel was born on July 8, 1941, in Brooklyn, N.Y. For 40 years, his company, Zakow Art Restoration, served the art and antiques community in the expert conservation and restoration of paintings. Greatly respected as a restorer of American folk art, marine and Nineteenth Century paintings, his range extended to European Old Masters and polychrome sculptures. Less well known was his work as an exhibiting artist and writer. His work was frequently shown in both New York City and in his beloved Connecticut at the Old Lyme Art Association. Joel Zakow thrived in the frenetic art world, both personally and professionally. Artists, dealers, collectors and friends were made welcome at his SoHo studio and home. All acknowledged that he combined artistic mastery with honesty and humility. Zakow Art Restoration remains open for business, led by experts in their own right, Teresa Zakow, Jan Jarecki and Andrei Zakow in their dear husband’s, friend’s and father’s memory.
