The Brimfield Antiques Market of July 11‱6 was again popular with many vacationers who, due to their other commitments or work, cannot attend May and September editions. This central Massachusetts site hosted a weeklong buying frenzy for shoppers adding to their homes, collections and, in the case of many who are part-time dealers, their inventories.
For example, Somkait, originally from Thailand and now living in Washington, D.C., purchased several vintage coats at Green Acres Tuesday morning, which he said were going to be cleaned and resold in his shop; but he added that he might wear the ones that fit him.
Dealers from out of the area have their favorite day to shop for additions to their collections and inventory. Anne Longley of Oxford, Conn., said her favorite day is Friday for the opening of J&J, when she also canvasses other fields.
Some dealers exhibit on one field and shop many others. Sandy Berman, a dealer from New York City and Miami, shops for as many days as her schedule will allow. Steve Jenkins, an antiques show producer and antiques dealer, exhibits twice during the week with friends, but he also shops for more great antiques.
Rod Brenner has a boat business in Toms River, N.J., as well as his antiques trade. At this summer show he found a single-cylinder gasoline engine from about 1902, which he plans to restore and install in a boat.
One rug dealer was among the people seen walking out of May’s on Thursday with as much as he could carry.
There are also collectors and homeowners who were there for the fun of it. The Miller family from Yarmouth, Mass., including father Dave and his daughters, Jessica and Emma, were at May’s early Thursday, each looking for great additions to their home décor. Dave found a sign saying “Radioactive”; Jessica’s sign said “Double Stamps on Wednesday” and Emma took an antique pressed metal car.
Brimfield is conducted three times each year. The last chance for 2011 will be September 6‱1. For information, www.brimfieldexchange.com , www.brimfieldfleamarkets.com , www.brimfield.com or call the local Chamber of Commerce at 413-283-2418.
