355 Lots In June 30 Auction
By R. Scudder Smith
CHADDS FORD, PENN. — Tuesday, June 30, was a busy day for William Bunch and his staff as the auction house staged a nine-hour-long sale that included works of art and part of the inventory of Raccoon Creek Antiques of Oley, Penn. The Raccoon Creek material, 355 lots, was sold without reserves by court order to settle some debts and went for a total of $161,170 hammer price. The auction house charges a buyer’s premium of 15 percent if by cash or good check, 18 percent if by credit card, and the various auction platforms vary between 21 and 23 percent.
“We were very happy with the entire sale, with about 50 percent of the artwork selling for $97,000 hammer, and all of the Raccoon Creek things selling except for some of the ironstone, which will be offered again at a later date,” Bill Bunch said. He added that “surface did well and if it had paint, it had interest.”

It measures 56 inches high, 48 inches between the rails, and 70 inches long. The estimate was $400-800, and it sold for $2,200 (hammer). A few lots later a rare bucket bench with three open shelves and a unique top half shelf with scalloped supports and backsplash, found in Maine, light salmon painted surface, dating from the Nineteenth Century, sold above the high $2,500 estimate for $3,500 (hammer). The bench measures 55 inches wide, 51¾ inches high, and 11½ inches deep.

There is talk that another sale of Raccoon Creek material may happen in the fall, but it has not been confirmed. Time will tell.
