CHICAGO, ILL. — The Post War and Contemporary Art sale on September 24 at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers sold three Alexander Calder works above high estimates. His stabile, “Long Brass Tail on Black and Red,” 1956, attained $845,000 while his paintings “Planets,” 1976, achieved $81,250 and his “Midnight Sun,” 1973, sold for $75,000.
Additional highlights were “Moutons de Pierre,” by Francoise-Xavier Lalanne that sold for $257,000 with a presale estimate of $150/250,000, Jack Goldstein’s untitled (Lightning), 1984, for $161,000 ($80,000 120,000) and Bill Taylor’s “Self Portrait Blue-House,” $137,000 ($20/30,000).
Paintings by Asian artists performed well, such as an untitled work by Hisao Domoto from 1960, for $75,000 against its $5/7,000 estimate and an untitled work by Chuang Che from 1990 that sold at high estimate for $30,000.
