DALLAS — Heritage Auctions’ Fall Fine Jewelry Signature® Auction on September 29 brought the harvest when a 1.21-carat fancy orangey red diamond shattered estimates when it reaped $1,755,000. The final price was nearly 12 times the ultra-rare gemstone’s high estimate of $150,000 and the highest price ever paid for an item of jewelry at Heritage. Before it made its way to Heritage, the diamond was set in a bracelet the consignor inherited from her mother. Heritage’s experts suspected it was color treated, as were about half of the colored diamonds sprinkled throughout the bracelet. After testing, it was revealed that the red diamond was indeed naturally colored. This was one of many loose and set stones sold during the auction, almost 500 lots in all, which amounted to $8,211,344 in total. Prices quoted with buyer’s premium as reported by the auction house.
