DALLAS — The original John Berkey final poster artwork for The Towering Inferno (1974) sold for $350,000 in Heritage’s July 27-29 Hollywood/Entertainment Signature Auction. The dramatic vintage original key art used for posters, advertisements and displays to promote the Irwin Allen-produced disaster film drew 17 bids before reaching its final result, soaring past its estimate of $100,000. The image is created in mixed media on illustration board measuring 26¼ by 35½ inches and is signed “Berkey” in the lower right corner, the signature almost obscured in the traffic far below the viewer’s perspective, easily overshadowed by the blazing building. The Towering Inferno became the highest grossing film of 1974 and won three Academy Awards. Original final poster artwork from major films rarely appears on the market.
