NEW YORK CITY — A double-sided drawing by Adolf Wölfli (1864-1930) was the top lot in Christie’s Outsider Art sale on January 22. Estimated at $40/60,000, “Der Grosse Skt. Adolf-Starn (The Great Saint Adolf-Star)” soared to $119,700, including buyer’s premium. The 26-by-43½-inch graphite and colored pencil on paper was published in two publications, included in two exhibitions and had previously been auctioned at Christie’s in Geneva, Switzerland. A buyer in Illinois, bidding online, prevailed against competition on the phones and online. A more extensive sale review will appear in an upcoming issue.
