NEW YORK CITY — Christie’s auction of Fine Printed Books and Manuscripts including Americana on December 19 saw two world records bested. The top lot was an Emancipation Proclamation signed by President Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of State William H. Seward on June 6, 1864. Estimated at $600/800,000, it sold to an American dealer for $669,500. This was a world record for a Lincoln-signed Emancipation Proclamation. (All prices cited include the buyer’s premium).
The other world record to fall was an Abraham Lincoln Carte-de-visite. The photograph, signed as President, was taken August, 9 1863, by photographer Alexander Gardner. An American collector purchased the photograph for $101,575 ($30/40,000).
Surpassing the $300/400,000 estimate was the $504,500 United States, Constitution of the Bill of Rights, with signature of Samuel Johnston of South Carolina, one of only five extant copies. It sold to an American collector.
