ASTORIA, N.Y. — Auctions at Showplace conducted a 145-lot Important Fine Art and Design Auction on October 8, featuring such categories as paintings, sculpture, photography, furniture, lighting, jewelry, art glass and more. Leading the sale was “G,” a warm-toned oil on Osnaburg cloth painting by American Abstract Expressionist James Brooks (1906-1992). The 1951 painting was signed to the lower right and measured 38 by 55 inches in its thin wood frame. Coming from a Central Park West (New York City) collection, and with extensive exhibition history, the lot flew past its $60/80,000 estimate to achieve $147,600, including buyer’s premium. A future edition will feature additional highlights from this auction.
