NEW YORK CITY — Hindman offered a boutique sale of just 91 lots of late Nineteenth and Twentieth Century American art and pottery in “Canvas & Clay: The Collection of Judith and Philip Sieg, Bellefonte, Penn.” The October 26 sale was 89 percent sold by lot and achieved a total of $1,608,516. Nine works by artist Albert York (American, 1928-2009) were presented, four of which swept the top three prices in the sale and two sharing the highest price of the day: $176,400, including buyer’s premium. First to achieve that was his “Porch Bench with Seated Figure,” a circa 1967 composition in oil on panel that had an extensive publication and exhibition history. Coming 30 lots later was the artist’s 1984 oil on panel “Landscape with Three Trees and Pond.” Both lots will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the artist. We will explore this sale in greater depth in an upcoming issue.
