Carl Michael Lindberg, 71, died at his home in Radnor on December 21, 2009. A founder of the Rufus Porter Museum in Bridgton, Carl was an avid golfer, antiques collector and member and financial advisor to Winterthur Museum, Strawbery-Banke Museum and Colonial Williamsburg.
He was a founding partner of Brandywine Global Asset Management, formerly of Wilmington, Del. Legg Mason purchased the firm in 1996, and he retired in 2001, but continued as a private financial advisor and partner with his wife, Julie Lindberg, in Julie Lindberg Antiques, which they began in 1980.
Born in Manhattan in 1938 to Dorothea Williams and Carl O. Lindberg, he attended the Browning School in New York City and graduated from Wilbraham Academy in Massachusetts in 1957. He earned an economics degree from the College of William and Mary where he served as national undergraduate and then graduate treasurer of Theta Delta Chi Fraternity, of which he was a member. He joined Brown Brothers Harriman of New York in 1964.
Moving to Philadelphia in 1971, he began Brandywine Asset Management in 1986. He and Julie became well-known dealers in Americana and Chinese porcelains, exhibiting in many national antique shows until 2008. He personally collected inkwells and marine art.
Together the Lindbergs were members of Collectors Circle at Winterthur Museum where Carl was a member of the finance committee. They also served on the board of advisors to Strawbery Banke, Portsmouth, N.H., where Carl headed its investment committee until 2005.
Known for his high integrity and business sense, great humor and mischievous pranks, he will be greatly missed by his friends and family, his business associates and the antiques community.
Carl is survived by his wife, Julie, a son, Carl Eugene, of Reston, Va., his daughter, Kristen Anne and son-in-law, Sam Healey, and granddaughter, Sydney, of Mamaroneck, N.Y.
A celebration of his life will be held Monday, January 25, at 11 am, at the St David’s Radnor Episcopal Church, 763 Valley Forge Road, Wayne, Penn. A lunch reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Rufus Porter Museum, PO Box 544, Bridgton, ME 04009, are suggested.
