What happens to the works an auction house isn’t quite ready to sell? Over the years, Collective Hudson has put aside works that left us with unanswered questions: paintings separated from their documentation, works accompanied by acquisition stories we could not verify, illegible or unidentified signatures, conflicting attributions, questionable authorships, and discoveries that simply required more research. Some appeared potentially important. Others seemed almost too good to be true. Now, we are bringing them together in one auction.

The more than 450 lots range from Old Master and Renaissance paintings to European works of the 17th through 20th centuries, Chinese and Asian antiquities, Art Nouveau and Art Deco, sculpture, furniture, glass, works on paper, icons, Russian and Eastern European art, and an unusually large group of unidentified or illegibly signed works awaiting another set of eyes.
Rather than pretending the questions don’t exist, we are making them part of the sale. Where appropriate, Collective Hudson explains what we know, what we don’t know, what we discovered during our research, and why we reached our opinion. Buyers are encouraged to examine the works, study the photographs and catalog information, conduct their own research, and reach their own conclusions.

Selected works rated A8-A10 that realize a hammer price of $5,000 or more may qualify for a refund within 30 days of the auction date if a recognized expert clearly states in writing that the work is a forgery and is not an authentic work by the artist described.
