Partake in a pre-Labor Day celebration by attending an in-person old-fashioned book and ephemera auction in the quaint village of South Glastonbury.
Let’s begin with a highly desirable 1547copy infull vellum of Baldassare Castigliche’s “II Libre del Cortrgiano.” Translated in English to “The Book of the Courtier,” it is regarded as a high point in Italian Renaissance literature.
Here’s a sampling of the 1st edition fiction for sale: by Kallas (1930) “The Wolf’s Bride,” by Faulkner (1932) “Light in August,” (1935) “Pylon,” and (1939) “The Wild Palms,” by Virginia Woolf (1937) “The Years,” and (1938, dj) “Three Guineas,” by Stout (1946, dj) “The Silent Speaker” and (1955, dj) “Before Midnight,” by Maritta Wolff (1962, dj) “Buttonwood,” by McMurtry (1975, dj) “Terms of Endearment,” and by Hawkins (2015, dj and signed) “The Girl on the Train.”
Poetry is well represented with these 1st editions by Samuel Loveman’s (1936, dj and signed) “The Hermaphrodite and Other Poems,” by Amy Clampitt (1981, signed) “The Isthmus,” by Hillyer (1925, dj and signed) “The Halt in the Garden,” and McCoy (1919, signed) “Merchants of the Morning.”
This auction continues to be rich in geological material like Jackson’s (1837, 1st) “First Report on the Geology of the State of Maine,” by Dana & Dana (1818, 1st) “Outlines of the Mineralogy and Geology of Boston and its Vicinity,” by Shepard (1837, 1st) “A Report on the Geological Survey of Connecticut,” by Tappan (1900, 1st) “The Klondike Stampede,” and by Whitney (1854, 1st) “The Metallic Wealth of the United States.”
From postcards, business cards and sales catalogs to WWII posters, here is a small sampling of the ephemera for sale. There are four lots of comic strip art previously bought from Heritage Auctions in 2005 of “Sad Sack,” Jerry the Jinx,” “Rags the Rabbit,” “Little Audrey,” and “Witchcraft Tricks.” There is film and television paper, an 1853 vellum patent application and a photo of the American Chain Co. of Bridgeport, CT New England Football champions for 1917 to carefully research. Add to this Cosmonaut Shatalou’s, Gina Lollobrigida’s, Leroy Neiman’s and June Lockhart’s signed material.
Lastly, we continue to have important history works like Pezuela’s (1842, 1st) “Ensayo Historico de la Isla de Cuba,” exploration like Jonveaux’s (1875, 1st) “Two Years in East Africa: Adventures in Abyssinia and Nubia,” and art like — Lynes’ (1999,1st) “Georgia O’Keeffe: Catalogue Raisonne.”
