Sterling Associates presents their HISTORICAL MEMORABILIA AUCTION
This auction is comprised of two sessions. Lots 1-60 are all American History, Memorabilia, Fine Art and Furniture.
The Alexander Hamilton Powder Horn is the centerpiece and closing lot # 60 of
Sterling Associates’ Jan. 11, 2016 Historical Memorabilia Auction (first session).
The Second session is a collection of fresh to the market antiques and collectibles.
Highlighted in this session are more Military books and memorabilia from the Gene Christian collec-tion.
Alexander Hamilton’s personally engraved powder horn. Inscribed with name and symbols in 1773, horn is one of few known tangible mementos of Founding Father appointed first Secretary of the Treasury. It is a profusely engraved powder horn of Hamilton’s very own, and it comes with a raft of supportive documentation to that effect, including a detailed letter from direct descendant Douglas Hamilton, who unequivocally state  that the horn was his great great great great great grandfather’s property. Among the images on the horn are:
-A large unicorn, symbolizing fortune and also Scotland, enhanced with a cinquefoil (five-petaled flower) from the Hamilton coat-of-arms
-An estate with fenced-in land and streams, symbolizing wealth and means
-A roundel of fasces (sticks tied with rope), an Ancient Roman token for civil authority
-A roundel with cinquefoil, representing honor and a nod to Hamilton’s noble Scottish roots
-It is also boldly carved “Alexander Hamilton 1773” and “First When When [sic.] Came To Ohio,” a phrase made in reference to American settlement.
