NEW YORK CITY — Another chapter in the storied legacy of Hollywood’s “Golden Couple” has closed, as Sotheby’s sales of “The World of Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman” concluded, bringing the series total to $4.3 million, nearly tripling its estimate of $1.5 million. All 341 lots offered sold, attracting more than 800 bidders from at least 30 countries.
Highlights of the auctions, which began on June 9 with Important Watches, included racing memorabilia and featured a Rolex Reference 16520 “Zenith” Daytona that sold for $1.1 million after a prolonged four-minute battle between three determined bidders. The same price was achieved when four bidders competed for Newman’s Rolex Reference 116519 Daytona — the last of the three known that Woodward ever gave Newman. On June 12, “A Life & Legacy” presented fine and decorative arts, film and entertainment memorabilia and personal accessories from the couple’s residences in Westport, Conn., and New York City. Concluding on June 13 with “High Speed,” RM Sotheby’s presented 99 artifacts from Newman’s adventurous racing life. The sale was led at $57,200 by Newman’s 1998 Volvo V90 “Volvette,” the third Volvo he hot-rodded.
A surprisingly high result of $82,550 was achieved for a Nineteenth Century portrait of a young black girl in a white dress holding a pocket watch (pictured), that sold to Woodbury, Conn., folk art dealer, David Schorsch in the “A Life & Legacy” auction.
“It’s a picture I’ve known about for 40 years; it had been published in Small Folk: A Celebration of Childhood in America (New York, 1981) and sold at an auction many, many years ago,” Schorsch said, confirming it had also recently been included in an article on jewelry in American folk portraits his colleague, Eileen Smiles, had published in Americana Insights, with whereabouts unknown. “When I saw that it was coming up for auction, I was just ecstatic. We’ve been looking for it for years and I’m very happy with the price we paid.” He confirmed he purchased it for stock.
