– On July 29 Christie’s New York conducted its sale of maritime art, offering 196 lots, of which 134 sold totaling $1,091,095 including the buyer’s premium.
The top lot was a painting by British artist Montague Dawson (1895- 1973) entitled “The Crossing: Mayflower II bound for Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1957.” It was purchased by the European trade for $83,650 ($60/80,000).
An American private buyer purchased the second highest lot, which also happened to be a painting by Montague Dawson. Estimated at $40/60,000, “Yachting scene – A fine morning, A spanking inshore breeze – The Solent” brought $71,700.
A dramatic painting entitled “On Deck, Barque Medway” by American artist Jack Gray (1927-1981) brought $59,750 from an American collector. It had been estimated at $35/55,000.
All prices cited include the buyer’s premium.
