Four works of art were recently reported missing from the wall at the back of the stage of the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors and Orchestra Musicians. The four bordered plaster of Paris cast bas reliefs depict musical motifs with nude figures. Each is approximately 16 by 24 inches and approximately 21/2 inches thick. Although school officials are uncertain of their provenance, it has long been assumed that they were brought back from a European concert tour by the school’s namesake, the French-American conductor Pierre Monteux, some time between 1945 and 1964. Maine State Police are currently investigating the disappearance of these items. Anyone with any information pertaining to them is asked to contact the Maine State Police at 207-624-7200.
