Albert Paley (b. 1944) Forged Steel “Rose” Garden Gate American, 1990 80 1/2" high, 46 1/4” wide Albert Paley, renowned modernist metal sculptor, has been active for over 40 years. Paley has completed over 50 site-specific works, including the Portal Gate for the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., and is the first metal sculptor to receive the coveted Institute Honors awarded by the American Institute of Architects, the AIA’s highest award for a non-architect. A custom commission dating from 1990, this one-of-a-kind garden gate, which features forged mild and stainless steel in the motif of a lush rose garden, represents the first of Paley’s rare forays into figural compositions. He expanded on this theme on a monumental scale in later commissions for both the Cleveland Botanical Garden and the Saint Louis Zoo.
