Dutch William III of Orange, and his wife Mary II became joint monarchs of England in 1689. The wood of choice for intricately carved elements became walnut, in place of heavier oak. This circa 1690 settee has an ornate base, with three upwardly flaring front legs, attached by intervening scrolled and arched stretchers; its side and rear stretchers have very complex turnings. 42.5 in.Hx5 ft. 2 in.Wx29 in.D
