Art Deco Platinum, Diamond, Emerald, and Enamel Brooch, Charlton & Co.- $15,000-20,000
Designed as a Chinese scroll partially unrolled, bead-set with old European- and single-cut diamonds, approx. total wt. 4.00 cts., further set with emerald beads joined by black enamel vines, millegrain accents, signed, wd. 3 in. Note: This brooch was originally owned by Catherine Lederer Durant (shown opposite), the wife of William Crapo Durant, co-founder of General Motors, Chevrolet, and Frigidaire. The Durants enjoyed a luxurious life before the stock market crash of 1929, and Mrs. Durant was known for her extensive collection of couture clothing and jewels. After her husband declared bankruptcy in 1936, Mrs. Durant was forced to sell most of her jewelry. She retained a few pieces which were passed down in the family. This brooch is one of the last remaining pieces of her collection.
