R Cahoon, Oil on Masonite- Price Upon Request
Oil on masonite painting of sailors and mermaids dancing by the shore in a New England seacoast village, signed lower right 'R Cahoon.' This larger than average painting has a large number of the New England motifs that Cahoon incorporated in his various paintings. The lighthouse and the church clock tower are strong vertical motifs for the opposite sides of the picture and the two sailing vessels with American flags below the two balloons also with American flags balance out the center portion of the image. The four sailors and the four mermaids dancing while holding floral bouquets provide a charming and colorful energy to the paintings foreground. The color density and contrasting colors provide the final touches for this painting being one of Cahoon's more successful works. The original owners have made a pencil notation on the reverse stating 'Mrs. M. McKay of Weymouth, Massachusetts.' (PA-856) Condition of painting: The painting is in excellent untouched condition. Condition of frame: The frame is original to the picture and has a fancy gold border and liner separated by a black panel. The frame is in very good condition. Dimensions of painting: 26 x 32. Dimensions of frame: 30 1/2 x 36 1/2.
