DELAWARE, OHIO — Amelia Jeffers’ Annual Thanksgiving Weekend Auction at the historical Garth’s Auction Barn was conducted Friday, November 28, and Saturday, November 29. The weekend brought together three single-owner collections and an assortment of antiques, fine and folk art, decorative art, militaria, historic Americana and Native American items from consignors across the country, totaling 1,019 lots of desirable merchandise. Selling on the second day to achieve the highest price of the two-day event was a diminutive Massachusetts Chippendale four-drawer blockfront chest made with Honduran mahogany. Crafted during the third quarter of the Eighteenth Century, the chest was cataloged as being “smaller than average scale with nice proportions.” The case measured 30½ inches wide by 18½ inches deep, and the top was 32 by 21¼ inches with a “generous overhang.” Its provenance included an important central Ohio collection as well as that of Joanne & Dr David Woodyard (Granville, Ohio) and Florene Maine (Ridgefield, Conn.). A phone bidder took the chest home for $24,600 including buyer’s premium ($20/30,000). Further discussion of the two-day auction will be featured in a future issue.
