On March 7, R.M. Smythe conducted a 1,127-lot auction of US colonial, copper, silver and gold coins. Held on the 12th floor of 2 Rector Street (in the Wall Street area of lower Manhattan), the sale realized over $1,000,000. Exuberant telephone and floor bidding eclipsed many of the high mail bids already in place. The highlight of the sale was a 1795 B-1 Flowing Hair Dollar in PCGS MS-63 which rose from an opening bid of $65,000 to $195,000 when the gavel finally struck. The 15 percent buyer’s premium brought this total to $218,500, more than four times the presale estimate. Other notable items at the auction included a 1652 Oak Treesixpence EF, $6,900; 1766 Pitt halfpenny AU, sold at $8,050; 1821cent NGC Pf-66BN, $37,375; 1794 half dime VF/EF, $4,312; 1937-D3-Leg nickel Ch AU, $2,875; 1919-D quarter NGC MS-63, $1,610;1919-S half dollar Ch AU, $2,300; 1796 dollar EF, $8,625; 1893-Sdollar AU/BU, $20,700; 1839-C $2.50 Ch EF, $4,600; 1882 $3 Ch AU,$3,450; 1845-D $5 Ch AU $3,450; 1878-S $5 Very Ch BU, $15,525; 1800$10 AU, $14,375; 1801 $10 BU $21,275; and 1907 HR PCGS MS-63,$23,000.
