The Potomack Company auction house achieved record prices October 2 for Asian works of art, with 124 Asian lots bringing $1,112,000 in vigorous international bidding.
The sale achieved the third highest price at auction for a Chinese carved white jade table screen, which attained $411,250.
In the last 25 years, approximately 400 Chinese jade table screens have sold worldwide at auction, and in that time only two higher sale prices for similar items have been realized at Christie’s Hong Kong and London.
The Potomack Company also claims a world auction record for a Chinese jade partial zodiac set that brought $164,500.
Asian jade at the sale surpassed the previous Washington-area record by more than $400,000, according to owner Elizabeth Wainstein, who attributes the success of the auction house to “the caliber and experience of our specialists as well as our strategic location in the Washington, D.C., area.”
“There is now another name to add to the list of auction houses competitive in the Asian market,” says The Potomack Company’s Asian arts specialist Pamela Cole.
Bidders present in the gallery flew to Alexandria from Hong Kong, Singapore and Beijing to participate in person. Bidding was also active internationally via telephone and the Internet.
