ASHEVILLE, N.C. – On November 6-8, the Brunk Auctions sale boasted more than $2.56 million sold over the course of the weekend. The top lot in the sale was a rare 1782 Revolutionary war chart of Yorktown from the time of Cornwallis’ surrender to Washington, deaccessioned by Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

The chart, Plan of the Posts of York and Gloucester, is the first British prototype to detail the situation around Yorktown at the time of the surrender. The second, by William Faden, did not appear until 1785. The last of the charts to be produced during the Revolutionary War by the British, it was the final inclusion in the Atlantic Neptune, which was heralded as “the most splendid collection of charts, plans and views ever published” by Obadiah Rich in Bibliotheca Americana in 1835. Very few of Plan of the Posts of York and Gloucester were ever published, and even fewer remain today. The one auctioned at Brunk Auctions was heavily exhibited and published, and eventually deaccessioned by Colonial Williamsburg Foundation to benefit the acquisitions fund. After competitive bidding, it sold to an anonymous phone bidder for $141,600. It was the top lot in the three-day sale.
