DALLAS, TEXAS — Leaving the best for last, Heritage Auctions’ end-of-season November 17–19 sports auction was topped by the record-setting sale of a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle rookie card that left the gallery at $1,135,250. A PSA NM-MT+ 8.5 example, this is the first auction sale of a post-WWII baseball card to exceed the $1 million mark.
Other high-grade trading card singles led the auction with 14 achieving bids above $100,000 in the $14,037,343 auction—this figure does not include post-auction sales, which have already surpassed $250,000 and remain ongoing through December 4.
A PSA Good 2 example of the T206 Honus Wagner trounced the standing record for the grade in Thursday’s trading card session, drawing a bid of $776,750 to validate the Old Dutchman’s enduring hobby legacy. Then PSA Mint 9 rookie cards of Jim Brown and Ted Williams soared to $358,500 and $239,000 respectively, each shattering previous records by multiples.
The Gary Carter Collection, from the Hall of Fame catcher, drew $550,000 in bids for an array of gear, awards and ephemera.
All prices given include the buyer’s premium. A full review of the auction will appear in a future issue.
