American Portrait Leads At Winter Associates
PLAINVILLE, CONN. — A folky Nineteenth Century American School portrait of a gentleman, unsigned but thought to be by the hand of Sheldon Peck (1797-1868), crossed the block at Winter Associates on January 26. The portrait attracted much interest and sold above estimate at $21,600. The year 1836 was referenced in the portrait, written on a scrolled paper held down by an inkwell on the desk in front of the sitter. The work was in a period-appropriate and likely original mahogany veneer frame with canted sides and laid down on board. For information, www.auctionsappraisers.com or 860-793-0288.

Rare Crowell Decoy Flies To Highest Price For ASA
SYRACUSE, N.Y. — On January 24, American Sporting Auctions conducted its 303-lot Winter Feature Decoy & Sporting Art Auction. Top-lot status was awarded to a never-rigged 17¼-inch-long black duck decoy by A. Elmer Crowell (East Harwich, Mass., 1862-1952). The circa 1916 decoy still had its original paint and was considered rare due to its stature: it was “A fatter and taller black duck than [Crowell’s] streamline black ducks.” Nearing the high end of its $6/9,000 estimate, the duck flew to $8,700.
