DALLAS — A 1959 Winter Dance Party poster sold for $100,000 to lead Heritage’s Concert Posters Signature Auction on April 10. This relic was created before the tour to sell tickets for Buddy Holly and the Crickets, Ritchie Valens, the Big Bopper, Dion and the Belmonts and Frankie Sardo playing at the Les Buzz Ballroom in Spring Valley, Ill., on February 7, 1959. Just five days before that date, the three top headliners died in a plane crash; Holly was laid to rest in his hometown the following Saturday, February 7 — the date of the show on this poster. NEW YORK CITY — Doyle’s April 14-15 An American Story auction offered American Paintings & Prints during session one, while American Silver, Furniture & Decorative Arts were offered during session two. A new auction record for artist Mary Jane Peale (American, 1827-1902) was earned at $349,750 for her “Portrait of Phillis,” an 1849 oil on paper laid to canvas of an elderly enslaved woman. Owned by the family of Eliza Patterson, the wife of Rubens Peale (Mary Jane’s father), Phillis “accompanied the young Peale family from the Patterson home in Pennsylvania to New York” and later Pottsville, Penn., until her death in 1854.
