Over the winter months we acquired two interesting collections that begin to appear this auction – one with a focus on geology and the other a nice group of mostly signed poetry.
Let’s begin with geology and by Henry D. Rogers (1858, 1st ed.) in three volumes “The Geology of Pennsylvania: A Government Survey,” by Whitney (1880, 1st. ed.) “The Auriferous Gravels of the Sierra Nevada of California,” by Hunt (1891, 1st ed.) “Systematic Mineralogy Based on a Natural Classification,” and by Lindgren (1911, 1st ed.) “The Tertiary Gravels of the Sierra Nevada of California,” To that partial list, add a copy of Cozzens (1843, 1st ed.) “A Geological History of Manhattan or New York Island,” with all the required plates and the colored map of the Island.
It wouldn’t be an auction without fiction. Here are some of the 1st edition titles available by Summers (1891) “Waukeenah’s Slave: A Legend, by Blatty (1971 in dj) “The Exorcist,” by Gillian Flynn (20 0 9 signed in dj) “Dark Places,” by Struther (1940 signed in dj) “Mrs. Miniver,” by Isaac Asimov (1952 in dj) “Foundation and the Empire,” and by Irving “The World According to Garp,” “The Hotel New Hampshire,” and “The Cider House Rules.” And to this list let’s not forget that we have signed limited edition copies of Charles Bukowski (1983) “Hot Music,” and (1994) “Pulp.”
If history is to your liking, then consider by Stansfield Turner (20 05 1st ed. signed) “Burn Before Reading,” by Tracy (1998 1st ed.) “The Navy Chronicle: The Contemporary Record of the Royal Navy at War,” by Elizabeth B. Custer (1889) “Tenting on the Plains or General Custer in Kansas and Texas,” and printed by Benjamin Franklin (1742 1st ed.) “A Collection of All the Laws of the Province of Pennsylvania now in Force.”
Of a traveling mind then we have by Schwatka (1898) “A Summer in Alaska,” by Erman (1850 1st ed.) “Travels in Siberia,” in 2 vols. by Lafcadio Hearn (1902 1st ed.) “Kotto,” and by Humboldt (1856 1st ed.) “The Island of Cuba.”
For ephemera enthusiasts we have framed posters and boxes of magazines and more. Oh, and not to forget that poetry mentioned earlier. It includes a limited signed edition of Allen Ginsberg’s (1986) “Old Love Story,” and a (1986) 1st edition in dustjacket copy of his “Collected Poems 1947-1980.”
